Trump raises possibility of delying Presidential elections

Updated: Aug 1, 2020

US President Trump on Thursday raised the idea of delaying the Nation’s November Presidential Election despite the Date being enshrined in the Constitution , Democrats and some of his fellow Republicans immediately condemned and called it an attempt to distract from devastating economic news.

Trump without evidence, time after time, claimed that mail-in voting is a fraudulent procedure and raised the question of delay , tweeting – “Delay the Election until people can properly securely and safely vote.”

Trump’s statement on Twitter comes as the United States (US) is living through the greatest crises of a generation - with more than 150,000 dead in the coronavirus pandemic, nationwide protests against police violence and racism, and on the morning the country reported its worst economic contraction since the Great Depression.

Representatives of White House did not immediately react to a request for comment on the Presidents idea of delaying the Elections .

Nominee Joe Biden has already begun preparations to protect voters and the Election amid fear Trump will try to impede in the November Elections. Trump said he would not trust the results of an election that included widespread mail voting - a measure that many observers see as critical given the coronavirus pandemic. Without evidence, he claimed that mail voting would be rife with fraud.

President Trump tweeted on Thursday that –“Americans needed to know the election results on the night of the voting, not days or months later. Mail-in ballots can sometimes take longer to count. It will be a great embarrassment to the USA, "Delay the Election until people can properly, securely and safely vote???"

However Critics and even Trump’s allies dismissed the notion as an un serious attempt to distract from devastating Economic news , but some legal experts warned that his repeated attacks could undermine his supporters faith in the Election process.

Chair of the House Judiciary Committee, Jerrold Nadler, said on Twitter in response to the President’s tweet –“ Let’s be clear: Trump does not have the ability to delay the election. Our elections are enshrined in the Constitution. The Constitution also says that if the date of the election is to be changed, it must be changed by Congress.”
