Timeline: Pakatan Harapan lacklustre promise toLGBT+ Community

March 8th 2018, Buku Harapan:

A manifesto is published by the political coalition Pakatan Harapan. It addresses their key policies or “promises” that they will enact should they come into power, significantly is promise 26. It states that they promise to “make our human rights record respected by the world”, which includes the following:

1) Make the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM)

2) Our goal is to ensure Malaysia’s position in the Universal Periodic Review improves and that our performance is at par with global development.

3) Suitable international conventions that are not yet ratified will be ratified as soon as possible, including the International Convention on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).

a) They have not successfully ratified this as of 28/7/2020.

This timeline acts to illustrate that the position of the LGBT+ community has yet to significantly improve and following the election, there has even been a rise in anti-LGBT+ sentiment. It is by no means exhaustive, and cannot fully represent the experience of the LGBT+ community in Malaysia.
