Rahul Gandhi stepped down as the Congress president after the 2019 elections when the party had faced an electoral drubbing. Sonia Gandhi took up the reigns and acted as interim chief on the 10th of August, 2019.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had said that she supports her brother Rahul Gandhi completely in his opinion that someone outside of the Gandhi family should be made the Congress president. She said that the Congress party should find its own path as well. Priyanka also said that she and Rahul would both accept a non-Gandhi as their leader and would support their decisions and abide by party policy. Many party leaders had expressed various concerns over the lack of party leadership and the backslide in the entire Congress party because of it. Congress leaders who had been suspended also alleged that a large majority of Congress members (some even in Parliament) had written to Sonia Gandhi requesting for a change in political leadership and transparency during elections to the Congress Working Committee.

Influential Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor also said that if Rahul Gandhi was unwilling to go back to the post of President, then elections should be held for the post as well as for the elected seats so that the party does not continue to seem ‘rudderless and adrift’.

Senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal and Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot are worried that the BJP is trying to topple their government and that action should be taken as soon as possible in terms of choosing a permanent leader for the party.
