Noida gets a Rainbow Station to Recognize Transgenders

The Sector 50 station of the Noida-Greater Noida Metro has been named Rainbow station in recognition of the transgender community. This move was made to trigger a change in how this community is viewed by other sections of society.

On June 19th, the Noida Metro Rail Cooperation announced its decision to convert the station in a ‘She-Man’ station that would have special facilities and employment opportunities for transgenders to ensure self-sustenance.

“The NMRC has received a number of suggestions from individuals and NGOs regarding a suitable name for the station which would correctly signify and represent the essence of the community. Keeping these suggestions in mind, the NMRC has decided to name the station as 'Rainbow' station,” NMRC Managing Director Ritu Maheshwari said on Wednesday.

“The NMRC has started this initiative with very noble intentions and aims to empower the transgender community,” she added. She also later clarified that the dedication to the community didn’t mean that the station was being reserved solely for their use. It will be open for use by the general public, she had clarified.

This movie holds a special significance as Pride Month is held every year in the month of June and aims to uphold the long struggle for equal rights fought by the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) community.

While announcing this initiative, the NMRC had cited Census 2011 figures to state that there are 4.9 lakh transgenders in India out of which 30,000 to 35,000 are staying in Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR).

Sector-50 metro stations will be upgraded to include toilet facilities which are likely to be completed in a months’ time.
