Mike Pompeo sets agenda for cold war with China

The day US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo was riling up the world to rise against the tyranny of China, Donald Trump called his Russian counterpart to discuss the inclusion of China in future talks regarding arms control, oil security and developments in Iran. according to analysts based in Washington and Moscow, this is the 5th call from Trump to Putin in 2 months regarding holding China accountable for its rampage for the long term interests of global peace.

Pompeo on his part has essentially upended the 1970s Nixon-Kissinger doctrine of engaging China in the belief that it would assimilate in the global comity of nations. The Nixon-Kissinger engagement cost the US its relations with India as the US at that point of time held India accountable for the split of Pakistan in 1971 and moved the USS carrier Enterprise.

By saying his past army record during the Cold War taught him that Communists always lie, Pompeo makes it clear that the new policy with China is “distrust and verify” which is refitting Reagan’s “trust and verify” slogan vis-a-vis Soviet Union through the 80s to present day China. Pompeo said,” General Secretary Xi Jinping is not destined to tyrannize inside and outside of China forever, unless we allow it….maybe it is time for a new grouping of like-minded nations, a new alliance of democracies,”

It may be early to interpret Pompeo’s statement, it is clear that China is not particularly interested in another Trump presidency. Pompeo did sound like US diplomat George F Kennan who sent the famous “long telegram” to the US State Dept. in February of 1946 where he talked about the US philosophy of “containment” to deal with the Soviet Union, although Pompeo has said he's not advocating for containment because the challenge facing the US with regard to china was much more complex than the one with the soviet union. As he said, “The USSR was closed off from the free world. Communist China is already within our borders”.

Pompeo has even quoted Nixon saying the world will not be safe until china changes on its head, saying that the world must change the CCP or china will change the world as is happening with Taiwan, Hong Kong and Xinjiang.

Following up on the US National Security Advisor’s Richard O’Brien, FBI Director Chris Wray and AG Barr’s stinging remarks on China, Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo has set the agenda for the dawn of another Cold War. The last one ended with the disintegration of the Soviet Union in erstwhile 1991, only this time around, the enemy is china.
