Manhattan DA Charges Woman for Calling the Police on a Black Birdwatcher
On July 6th the Manhattan DA charged Amy Cooper, a white woman who was filmed threatening to call the police on an innocent African American bird watcher in Central Park; the incident took place in May.
As said by the DA of Manhattan Cy Vance, “Today our office initiated a prosecution of Amy Cooper for falsely reporting an incident in the third degree,” The DA could not provide any further details other than Cooper was issued a desk appearance ticket for an arraignment on October 14th on the charges of misdemeanor.
The victim named Christian Cooper has said he was watching birds in Central Park on Memorial Day and discovered that a dog was off its leash and was tearing through vegetation. He then told the owner, the accused, Amy Cooper, that her dog needed a leash and tried to lure the dog away from the plants with the help of treats. The situation went downhill from there and as recorded by Christian Cooper, Amy Cooper became enraged and threatened Christian by saying,” I’m taking a picture and calling the cops,” she says in the footage. “I’m going to tell them there’s an African American man threatening my life.” Officers did arrive at the scene but made no arrest.
The video, which was posted on Christian’s Facebook page and went viral overnight, the very next day, Amy Cooper’s investment firm, Franklin Templeton, fired her.
The mayor of New York Bill DeBlasio called Amy Cooper’s actions, “racism, plain and simple".
Amy Cooper’s attorney Robert Barnes has said, “The rush to judgment by some in the public, in this cancel culture epidemic, will be proven as wrong as cancel culture itself. She lost her job, her home, and her public life,” Barnes told ABC News. “Now some demand she lose her freedom? How many lives are we going to destroy over misunderstood 60-second videos on social media?”
Amy Cooper had apologized in a statement on the very next day and Christian Cooper has accepted her apology as well and has stated in an interview that all Amy needs to do now is introspect.
