Maharashtra CM contacted by underworld don Dawood Ibrahim’s aide
On the evening of the 5th of September 2020, the Chief Minister’s residence, Matoshree, received calls supposedly from an aide of the underworld don Dawood Ibrahim.
Matoshree received four calls on one of its telephone numbers and while 2 were missed, the other two were answered by a telephone operator and then a senior police official of the crime branch. The caller asked to talk to the Chief Minister himself, however, the operator refused to transfer the call to the Maharashtra CM.
The caller identified himself as a Mohammad Khalid of the Dawood Ibrahim gang, also known as the D-Company within the city of Mumbai, and said he was calling from a location in the UAE. The crime branch of the Mumbai Police has begun an investigation into tracing the phone call and locating the caller. The officials had visited the residence earlier, on Sunday afternoon. The security around the residence has since been increased significantly.
The state home minister informed other members of the state cabinet that the matter was being looked into by the Mumbai Police Crime Branch when the issue was brought up at the cabinet meeting on Sunday. According the secretariat of State, the members of the cabinet were of the view that this was a very important and serious matter which must be looked into at the earliest. The cabinet members also believed that the Centre must look into it and ensure that the caller is punished accordingly.
Dawood Ibrahim is one of the world’s most wanted mobsters and terrorists. His association called D-Company was notorious for various crimes such as extortion, vendetta murders and drug peddling. The gang’s strong grip on the city of Mumbai during the 1980’s and the 1990’s is considered a very dark period in the history of the city.
