HUNDREDS KILLED IN PROTESTS AGAINST THE MURDER OF FAMOUS ETHIOPIAN SINGER

SINCE THE SHOOTING OF A FAMOUS ETHIOPIAN SINGER, 215 CIVILLIANS HAVE LOST THEIR LIVES DUE TO A COMBINATION OF LETHAL FORCE BY SECURITY OFFICERS AND INTERETHNIC VIOLENCE.

HACHALU HUNDESSA WAS A POLITICAL SINGER WHO BELONGED TO THE OROMO ETHNIC GROUP OF ETHIOPIA.

ON 29TH JUNE, UKNOWN ATTACKERS SHOT HACHALU, LEADING TO HEIGHTENED ETHNIC TENSIONS WHICH QUICKLY TURNED INTO VIOLENCE AND THREATENED THE COUNTRY’S DEMOCRACY.

IT HAS BEEN SUSPECTED THAT THE SHOOTING WAS CARRIED OUT BY AN ANTI-GOVERNMENT GROUP, NAMELY THE” Oromo Liberation Front (OLF)”.

SECUIRTY FORCES HAVE ARRESTED 5 MEMBERS OF THE OLF ON MURDER CHARGES OF HACHALU HUNDESSA.

HE STARTED WRTING SONGS WHILE HE WAS IMPRISONED FOR CERTAIN POLITICAL ACTIVITIES DURING 2003-2008 . AFTER RELEASING HIS FIRST ALBUM IN 2009, HE BECAME A POLITICAL SYMBOL FOR THE OROMO PEOPLE’S ASPIRATIONS OF SELF-RULE.

IT HAS ALSO BEEN REPORTED THAT HACHALU HAD RECEIVED MANY DEATH THREATS THE PAST YEAR DUE TO HIS SONGS AND POLITICAL MOVEMENTS.

THE OROMO PEOPLE LONG COMPLAINED OF BEING SIDELINED, FACING GOVERNMENT REPRESSION AND POLITICAL EXCLUSION INSPITE OF BEING THE BIGGEST ETHNIC GROUP IN ETHIOPIA.

PROTESTS ERUPTED IN 2016 AT THE CAPITAL ADDIS-ABABA AND ITS SURROUNDING REGIONS FOR A MORE DEMOCRATIC GOVERNMENT. THIS BUILT PRESSURE ON THE GOVERNMENT, AND THE RULING COALITION EVENTUALLY REPLACED THE THEN-PRIME MINISTER DESALEGN WITH MR. ABIY.

MR.ABIY BROUGHT IN THE MUCH NEEDED REFORMS TO THE ONCE OPRESSIVE STATE AND ALSO WON A NOBEL PEACE PRIZE IN 2019. HOWEVER, THESE WEREN'T ENOUGH AS THE SIMMERING ETHNIC TENSIONS STILL POSED AS A PROBLEM, AND MANY ACCUSED HIM OF REVERTING TO THE TACTICS OF HIS PREDECESSORS.

THIS WAS FUELLED BY THE LONG STANDING INTER-COMMUNAL VIOLENCE AS AN AFTER EFFECT OF THE 2016 UPRISINGS.

ANOTHER MAJOR CAUSE WAS THE ARREST OF THE OROMO OPPOSITION LEADER BEKELE GERBA AND MEDIA MOGUL JAWAR MOHAMMED. ALL BEING OROMO, THIS ONCE AGAIN BRING THE WHOLE DEMOCRATIC REFROM BACK TO SQUARE ONE—OROMO PEOPLE BEING SIDELINED.
