Covid Crisis in Texas
•Since the pandemic initially swept the U.S. starting early this year, almost 2 million people have been infected and more than 110,000 have died.A second wave of the Covid hits the US as Texas reports 4000 new cases in the span of the last two weeks as of the 29th of June. Texas on Wednesday reported 2,504 new corona virus cases, the highest one-day total since the pandemic emerged.
•Experts still remain puzzled as to why the sudden rise in cases has occurred, some say it may be due to the outbreaks come weeks into state reopening, there is no clear stat that they’re linked to increased economic activity and health experts say it’s too soon to tell whether the massive protests against police brutality that have erupted in the past two weeks have led to more infections.
•The governor of Texas stated “We want to make sure that everyone reinforces the best safe practices of wearing a mask, hand sanitization, maintaining safe distance, but importantly, because the spread is so rampant right now, there’s never a reason for you to have to leave your home”, this comes in contradiction to his plans of re-opening the state despite several warnings from health experts that there would be a surge of corona virus cases if a state as big as Texas was to re-open.
•After a national shutdown that arrested the spread, rising illness had been expected as restrictions loosened. The trend has been observed across 22 states in recent weeks, though many increases are steady but slow but this has not been the case when it comes to Texas, Florida, California as the three states collectives saw a rise of cases in 9000 cases in the last week.
•New York and Washington were in crisis, the number of cases and deaths here remained remarkably low, Texas was being spared because of a lack of density in the city or because people drove alone in their cars instead of cramming into subways or the already rising temperatures were unsuitable for the virus, but now Texas is the best example of not following through safety procedures while re-opening the state.
